Comedy Skills

Keara has been devising and leading courses in comedy skills for seven years.  She offers courses in stand-up, writing and sketch comedy.

Stand-up

This is a comprehensive course of master-class workshops exploring the fundamentals of stand-up comedy.  The course culminates in and end-of-term showcase performed before an invited audience with a professional emcee and an experienced headline act.

The participants, who will have evolved into fledgling comedians, will have the opportunity to demonstrate their newly gained skills and, hopefully, make people laugh!  The students will be filmed and then have the opportunity to review this film at the final session.

The course will run over eight two-hour sessions, where the participants will learn a variety of comedy skills including:

  • Joke-writing
  • Stagecraft
  • Microphone technique
  • Character development
  • Finding material
  • Making stories funny
  • Acting-out routines
  • Body language
  • Facial Expression
  • Voice Work
  • Delivery and presentation

They will also learn how to become a working comic and will visit and perform in an actual comedy club, where they will be introduced to other professionals and promoters.  They will learn the craft of stand-up comedy with the opportunity to progress onto open-mic level and beyond.

Comedy Writing

Participants who do not want to pursue a career as a stand-up will be given help and advice on writing comedy for others.  This course is also helpful for anyone who wishes to explore their humorous side and can be a fantastic asset in business or for actors wishing to pursue comic roles.

Sketch Comedy

Courses are also available in sketch comedy.  Participants will work in small groups to come up with routines and present the sketches in character.  Instead of one person telling the story, a group acts out the story in character.  For sketch comedy the participants will learn all the basic fundamentals of joke writing but they will also learn how to create non-stereotypical comedy characters and how to work together in the creative process.
